of Ecotourism
The United Nations has designated 2002 as the International Year of Ecotourism, providing an opportunity to highlight and showcase the many positive examples worldwide of how ecotourism has benefited local cultures, wild areas and economic growth. Universal Pjoject Tourism is proud to participate in this endeavor by donating proceeds from of its new Ecosafaris trips to Sinai and the Western Desert to The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), which is the only nonprofit organization in the world dedicated to promoting sustainable ecotourism. Introduction to the Western Desert
Who doesn't know about the Nile Valley with the Pyramids
and Valley of the Kings, or the Eastern Egypt with Sinai and
the Red Sea? Less know about the New destination in Egypt,
which is: the Western Desert and it's Oases.
This desert was previously called the "Libyan Desert" and
covers an area of 680'000 square kilometres - or two third
of Egypt. As it's hard to understand this size by numbers
alone, let us mention that this area is equal to a combined
sizeof these seven countries; Austria, Belgium, Denmark,
Greece, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland!
In east lies "Ramla El Kebir" (The Great Sand Sea), a huge
area of moving sand dunes where nobody should even think
about venturing without the best possible expertise and team.
South of Ramla El Kebir is Gilf Kebir - a mountain plateau with
numerous valley's. The size of Gilf Kebir is about the
size of Switzerland.
Universal Project Tourism have the expertise, fully equipped
four wheel drive cars and the best drivers to take you into
such extreme difficult and equally beautiful area's. |

|
North of Ramla El Kebir lies Siwa, the legendary Oasis
where Alexander the Great was proclaimed Pharaoh
of Egypt by the Amon Oracle. It's a beautiful Oasis
with temples, Cleopatra's bath, palm groves and
local traditions which should be enjoyed as
respected by visitors.
Three major Oasis is located in what's today are called
Wadi Gedid (the New Valley) in the Western Desert.
This New Valley is in fact the real old Nile Valley, as
it was here the Nile had its course in prehistoric times.
Today its underwater coming from rain seasons further
south in Africa making these four Oases unique
agricultural areas. Not exactly what one imagine
when hearing the word "desert"...
|

|
Travelling from North one first reach Baharia Oasis
and the Black Desert just north of the entrance
to the New Valley. Going south and down towards
the next Oasis, Farafra - one will pass one of the
most unique areas in the world, the White Desert
with its unbelievable formation. A night in the
White Desert should be on the program for all
desert travellers. In Farafra one border the eastern
edge of Ramla El Kebir (the Great Sand Sea).
Further south is the beautiful Oasis of Dakhla
with all its villages and attractions - and the remains
of the medieval town of Qasr. From Dahkla the road
goes east towards the Oasis of Khargha - the
administration centre of the New Valley.
It is of course best to have four wheels drive cars
going in the desert - still it's possible to visit all these
Oasis via road with normal mini vans, and more "local"
four-wheel drive cars can be arranged in the Oases.
South of Cairo is the Oasis of Fayoum which is
possible to visit during a full day tour from Cairo.
To discover the Western Desert today is equal to
have visited the Red Sea before this became a world
wide known and famous destination. In short - the
Western Desert is an area for desert Safari hardly
found anywhere else in the world. Universal Project
Tourism have own cars, a good team and some of the
best desert drivers found in Egypt and we are all
ready for your journey - be it a large expedition
or a shorter visit to the Oasis.
